PARADISE ON EARTH - India's answer to Switzerland

Kashmir, a breathtaking paradise nestled in the Himalayas is an enchanting destination that captivates the hearts of Tourists from around the world. It’s picture perfect valleys, thrilling adventures and tranquility of Dal Lake make it an unforgettable travel destination.

We have visited Kashmir three times (Summer, Winter and Autumn), and each time we return with the intention of visiting again. The strong desire to return to the valley speaks to the immense beauty of this place.

So far we have visited 4 places in Kashmir, Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonmarg.

Our point of entry to Kashmir was SRINAGAR, the capital city, nestled in the lap of the breathtaking Kashmir Valley.

The most iconic attraction in Srinagar is the Dal Lake, often referred to as the "Jewel in the Crown of Kashmir." This stunning lake, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and Mughal-era gardens, is famous for its floating houseboats.

We experienced an enchanting and tranquil retreat in HOUSEBOAT stay. It was beautifully adorned with traditional Kashmiri decor, exuding a warm and inviting ambiance. The panoramic views of the shimmering lake were breathtaking, especially during sunrise and sunset, when the vibrant colors painted the sky. Our stay was comfortable and memorable. We indulged in delicious local cuisine served onboard, the stay was truly unforgettable, offering a unique and immersive way to embrace the charm and tranquility of Kashmir..

We had a soothing Shikara (Traditional Kashmiri Boat) ride the next day to enjoy the floating vegetable market and other important places in Dal Lake. This is a unique market operates on the lake itself, where locals sell fresh vegetables and fruits from their boats, it’s a vibrant and colorful sight to behold. They showcase a array of spices handicrafts and fresh produce. One can relax and admire the beauty of Dal Lake while riding on Shikara.

A not to miss attraction on Dal Lake is CHAR CHINAR.  Located in the middle of Dal Lake, it is a small island with Four Chinar trees (One of these was very small).

It is a masterpiece of nature's artistry. As the gentle waves of the lake caress its shores, the towering chinars stand tall, their branches reaching towards the heavens.

The reflection of the Char Chinar on the crystal-clear waters of Dal Lake creates a mesmerizing and ethereal sight. The mirrored image of the trees, dancing with the rhythm of the gentle breeze, creates a sense of harmony and tranquility that captivates the soul.

One cannot help but be enchanted by the symphony of sounds that emanate from the Char Chinar. The rustle of leaves, the songs of birds, and the soft whispers of the wind create a melodious orchestra that soothes the senses and transports one to a world of serenity.

We dream of witnessing the magical experience of sunrise around Char Chinar. Just imagine how the serene lake waters around Char Chinar and the surrounding snow-capped mountains create a picturesque setting for the sunrise. Picture the sun rising over the mountains, gradually changing the sky's colors as shades of orange, pink, and purple reflect on the pristine lake waters. The branches of Chinar Trees sway gently in the morning breeze, adding to the tranquil atmosphere and stunning natural beauty. It is wondrous to imagine what it would be like. Would the beauty of that moment allow us to simply sit back and enjoy the view, or would we be compelled to capture it with a camera lens? Regardless, it would undoubtedly be an unforgettable experience. We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to witness it on our next visit to Kashmir.

The other major attraction in Srinagar is the MUGHAL GARDENS, which showcase the grandeur of the Mughal Empire. These meticulously manicured gardens, including Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Chashme Shahi, are adorned with colorful flowers, fountains, and terraced lawns. These gardens offer a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, picnics, and capturing picturesque views of the city.

PAHALGAM is the place in Kashmir that we love to spend time in. Located in western part of the Kashmir Valley in Anantnag district. It is a stunning destination with breathtaking natural beauty. Surrounded by Lush Green meadows, snow capped mountains and picturesque landscapes with Lidder River flowing through the town make pahalgam a truly enchanting place. One can enjoy Trekking, Horsing, White-River Rafting and camping.

There are several beautiful valleys that can be visited around Pahalgam within a 15km radius. These include Aru Valley, Betab Valley, Chandanwari Valley, and Baisaran. While it is possible to cover these places in a single day, if you have a deep appreciation for nature and enjoy spending time in green surroundings, it is recommended to allocate a minimum of 2 days. This way, you can dedicate one day to exploring Aru, Betab, and Chandanwari Valleys, and another full day for a trek to Baisaran..….

Baisaran’s beauty is truly breathtaking, they call it “Switzerland of Kashmir”. It is surrounded by towering snow-capped mountains and lush greenery creating a stunning landscape. It serves as a campsite for trekkers visiting Tulian Lake.  It should be visited in Summer when the valley is lush green.

SONMARG is a captivating destination that showcases the awe-inspiring beauty of nature. Whether you are an adventure enthusiast or simply seeking solace in the lap of nature, Sonmarg offers an unforgettable experience that will leave you with cherished memories. The name "Sonmarg" translates to "Meadow of Gold," and it truly lives up to its name. One of the major attractions in Sonmarg is the Thajiwas Glacier, which is accessible via a thrilling trek or a pony ride. This glacier offers a mesmerizing view of the surrounding snow-clad mountains and is a popular spot for adventure seekers.

GULMARG, located in the heart of the Kashmir Valley, is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. Known as the "Meadow of Flowers," Gulmarg is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and a wide range of activities that cater to all kinds of travelers.

The town is surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Himalayas, offering breathtaking views that leave visitors in awe. One of the main attractions in Gulmarg is the Gondola, one of the highest cable car systems in the world. This thrilling ride takes you to the top of Apharwat Peak, offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and snow-covered mountains. It is a must-try experience for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts.

Gulmarg is also a popular destination for skiing and snowboarding during the winter months. The town receives heavy snowfall, transforming it into a winter wonderland. The slopes of Gulmarg are perfect for both beginners and experienced skiers.

We rented horses from Pahalgam, which were of pony's height, to embark on a trek to Baisaran. The trail led us through dense forests and lively streams, offering breathtaking views of the majestic Himalayan ranges and the captivating Lidder Valley. The experience was truly mesmerizing. On our return journey to Pahalgam, we followed the route through Dabyan, Kashmir Valley, and Waterfall, making stops at each of these places along the way.

Kashmir is celebrated for its breathtaking valleys, serene lakes, and lush greenery. It offers a unique combination of natural beauty, a rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality. Both destinations provide a plethora of adventure activities, including skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and more. Switzerland stands out for its well-developed tourism infrastructure and efficient transportation systems.

In summary, both Switzerland and Kashmir offer captivating natural beauty and unique experiences. Ultimately, the choice between the two destinations depends on personal preferences and interests.
